Let us fall silent
For the miners who died on the picket line
and the teenager who died trying to get coal to keep his family warm

Let us fall silent
For the thousand who died in the Falklands
and the hundreds who have taken their own lives since

Let us fall silent
For the ninety six of Hillsborough,
whose deaths were compounded by accusations and controversy

Let us fall silent
For the evicted and discarded,
who lived in homes and died on the streets

Let us fall silent
For those lost to violence in safe, policed cities
because their face, their race, their heart didn't fit

Let us fall silent
and remember them all
and then let us shout so we never forget

Easter

As most of you know, I've opted not to go the Empire as a player just yet. I might give it a go next year, but this year I'm devoting time to archery.

So, to distract myself from wishing I was running around a field at the birth of a system and world that seems designed to push all my buttons, I planned a long weekend of fun.

First of all, I invited Leah to pop up and visit me. I love having a house guest, especially one who is such good company. It's nice to be able to relax in company without necessarily talking.

But my long weekend actually began on Thursday night when I had a really lovely date with one of my new friends. She's a Finnish lady who speaks perfect English with a rather beguiling accent. We had a really lovely time and have been in touch since (although she had a nasty cold over the Easter weekend). I'm looking forward to seeing how this goes... although it won't go anywhere quickly as she's about to go travelling for two months. No matter - I don't have a good record when it comes to jumping into relationships feet first ;-)

Other weekend highlights included a visit to the Fitzwilliam Museum, my first open mic night (with lots of kind support), a long Sunday pub lunch, a lazy Monday spent mostly on the sofa, and catching up with Fliss and Alex (friends I stayed with when I moved down here).

Archerywise, I am currently without a set of limbs I can easily shoot. I can draw my 44lbs set up, but cannot control it. I need some limbs to get me to around 40lbs. Border loaned me a set, but there was a slight problem with them so I sent them back up two weeks ago. Still no replacement set. Argh. I might have to just buy a cheap and nasty set to shoot in the meantime.

The wonderful and talented Bev Lee Harling, she of the Mediaeval Baebes, has a new single out. It's called "Buy Me" and is not in the least Mediaeval. Please consider clicking the link below to have a listen and to increase the number of hits she gets on YouTube. If you really like it, you could always pay a couple of quid to download the song together with an excellent cover of Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic.

Bev was instrumental in helping me lose my stage fright, so if you've ever sat and listened to me sing (whether it was a pleasure or a chore ;-) then you owe her a click at least :-)

However you are celebrating at this time of year, or even if you aren't, I hope you are all warm, well and loved.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

The Gathering approaches...

I've packed, well mostly. There're just a few things to throw in the car in the morning.

I'm leaving straight after work at 16:30. I probably won't hit site until just before 18:00. I intend to get my tent sorted ASAP, gather a few people, and head to the Chinese takeaway to get supper.

Oh, I should say I'm spending most of the daylight hours on Sunday visiting with Daniel, Ellie and Benjamin, while Kaz pops over to Locko. Hopefully I will see some other Nottingham residents when I do so.

Looking forward to seeing some of you there. :-)

A Maelstrom event summary will follow soon [1], but for now, I need help.

I really dropped myself in it this event, by being nominated for co-ordinating the music for the Flembic Ball at the next event. This in itself is not so bad - the dances are all being handled by someone else, and we can use the same music as at the January event.

However, I foolishly opened my mouth and said "And between dancing sets, I can sing a few songs."

Argh.

I know only a few songs that are suitable IC for Maelstrom, and all but one are quite miserable love songs.

So, help me! I need lyrics and chords and preferably links to covers of folky-type songs I can start learning right now. Anything relatively cheerful and about love would be especially handy. EDIT - And anything not lewd. Sadly I will be performing these for upper-class types.

I've been trying to look up chords for "She's Like The Swallow" and the like, but the internet is surprisingly unhelpful when it comes to some trad songs. And yes, I include Mudcat in that.

Please, pelt with examples and help.

[1] The very short summary - Hot: everything. Not: nothing. Utterly stunning event.

My friend, you would not tell with such high zest
To children ardent for some desperate glory,
The old lie: Dulce et decorum est
Pro patria mori.
